When #GlamNailsChallengeJune said “city”, I thought “giant Kaijū destroying the city” because I’ve been wanting to paint that sort of thing for a while. It was just too tempting since I have glow in the dark powders to use. I also felt like I could count this as an Inspired by a Book mani for #NailArtChallengeCollaborative since Godzilla is very popular and has made appearances across all common media. So I used a lot of reference pictures like the one I’m showing here and flailed away at my nails for maybe an hour and called it good.
To get the glow in the dark powder to glow so powerfully in a half-lit situation, I exposed my nails to my 36W LED lamp for curing gel polish for about 15 seconds. I do have a photo taken in full darkness, but it kinda muddles what happens because I didn’t fully outline Godzilla with a lighter amount of glow in the dark stuff. Something to remember for next time.
- Base Polish:
KBShimmer’s “Men are from Mars-ala” - Freehand painting with acrylic paint and Beauty BigBang glow in the dark powders in J2103-3A (dark blue) (press sample) mixed with generous amounts of clear polish.
- Stamping Polishes:
Mundo de Unas’ “Black” and “White” - Stamping Plates:
Moyou London Tourist Collection 11 (Tokyo)
Generous amounts of clear polish really is key with the glow in the dark powders. It still ended up being grainy and I applied it thickly to get lots of glowiness, but I had a lot more control over it and could paint finer details. Glow in the dark acrylic paint is still easier to work though. It dries a little more slowly and is smoother. I may have to try mixing these with other mediums so I can get the best of both worlds…
One last look at the mighty Godzilla…
Finally, the inLinkz for the group. I’m worried again because participation is way down. Next month’s theme will be geometric. I can only hope more people join in.
Well, that’s the end of June for me and I managed to get every prompt from #GlamNailsChallenge done so I thought I’d post the “completed” image I’m throwing up on Instagram here. Yes, I know this design is posting in the beginning of July, but I did finish it in the last minutes of June. 🙂
