A still life of random objects erased out of a paper covered in charcoal.

charcoal still life

I believe this was the fourth assignment for Drawing I. We covered the piece of paper in a thick layer of charcoal and used erasers to make the objects. Several of the students felt like this wasn't drawing and--since they had some mental block that told them they couldn't draw--did extremely well on this assignment where they hadn't before. Which only proves that they were wrong about how they couldn't draw, but I don't think any of them saw it that way.

The annoying thing about this was a still life shared with another class. So there were the usual problems or people rearranging objects for themselves and migrating stools so you were never quite at the angle you were last time. 18x24 student grade paper and charcoal.
